As part of the refurbishment and redevelopment of Pensby Day Centre by Wirral Evolutions, Enscape were commissioned to design and develop a garden incorporating two zones – Butterfly and Sensory. The garden was funded by Tesco as part of their local community support programme.
Challenges included a cost-prohibitive original plan designed by another party, tight time schedule and extensive waste disposal.
Responding to the challenge of a set budget, we designed the sensory garden using the existing paved areas and by installing a new water feature. We used matching planters and created a container landscape which allowed wheel chair access.
The butterfly garden was designed to include a pathway and seating area using self-binding gravel and utilising existing trees and shrubs within the plan. The existing area was situated on a disused built-up patio and needed to be at ground level for wheel chair access. Therefore we removed 90-tonnes of waste and then created a beam around the perimeter of the garden.
Finally, an herbaceous border was created using perennial herbaceous plants arranged closely together, to create a dramatic effect through colour and to attract butterflys.
Planting as follows; Buddleia, the butterfly bush is planted to form a screen along the length of the garden. Varieties used were Flower Power and Black Knight.
The depth of the garden is created by height layers including sways of Echinacea, Agastache, Verbena, Weigela, Rudbeckia, Monarda, Lysimachia, Geranium, Hebe, Sedum.
The path edges were planted with mixed varieties of Thyme.
The Sensory Zone was created with a centre-piece contemporary water feature and matching aluminium containers, planted with Lavender, Rosemary, Diathus and Primula.
This project demonstrates the following:
The ability to adapt and respond to a new brief within budget and timeframe.
The ability to source unique products.
Effective project management.
Excellent client relationship listened and reacted to concerns and queries in timely and effective manner.
Clean and Tidy Site philosophy.
Products sourced: Aluminium planters – designed not to rust, low maintenance.
